After countless hours of stripping, sanding, and patching the front staircase it is finally time to start putting some finish back on. I wasn’t intelligent enough to take any before pictures so you’ll have to use your imagination or check this post.

The stain I used is Varathane Red Chestnut. I did four test samples at Christmas and then took a poll. The red chestnut was the unanimous choice.

In the picture below you can see the extent of the patching I had to do on the stairs. After years of abuse and then having carpet nailed to them I had quite a few holes to patch. It averaged about 50 holes/gouges per step. The plan is to paint the stringers and other trim white, and then paint the stairs a deep brown and install a runner.

We’re almost there. I can taste it!

I’m Still Alive…

It’s been a long time since I’ve posted anything and some people have expressed concern:

“Is he still alive?”

“Has he finally seen reason and walked away from that enormous money pit?”

“Did Ted the Angry Zombie eat his brains?”

To answer your questions: yes, not yet, just a nibble.

In addition to cleaning the staircase in preparation for painting and staining, there have been weekends spent visiting friends out of town, ski season has eaten quite a few evening and weekends, and of course tax season has come once more.

And then there’s the snow. I don’t remember a winter with so much snow since I was a wee house-blogger. Here’s a picture of our last snow storm. The snow was up to my hips in the driveway. I didn’t think anyone would believe me so I took a picture:

Enough socializing for now. There’s work to be done.

Where am I?
